Harry Witherby

By Justin Dean in In Memoriam

All Old Brutonians will be sad to hear that, after a long battle since the end of April, Harry (Alan, AJ) Witherby died on Saturday 24th July.

The family have not yet decided on the funeral arrangements but we shall send an email to let all Old Brutonians know as soon as we are able. Harry was very involved on the Committee of the Old Brutonian Association and organised several London Lunches. He will be greatly missed by all of us.

Gareth Evans, Deputy Headmaster, elected Honorary Old Brutonian

justin.Jpg Tuesday, 29 June 10 - 04:24 PM (GMT)
By Justin Dean in General

At the OBA Day at King's last Saturday, Gareth Evans, Deputy Headmaster was elected an Honorary Old Brutonian by those members present at the AGM.

He is seen here receiving his OB tie from the President, Colonel John Longman.

Drinks and canapes were served in the Millennium Circle and proved so successful that it is a pattern that may well be followed again in the future. There is already talk of The Great Bruton Picnic.

The next major social event is the London Lunch on Friday, December 3rd in the Stationers' Hall. The estimated cost will be £72.

BRUTON LUNCH 2010

User photo not available Tuesday, 08 June 10 - 09:14 AM (GMT)
in General

We have sorely missed Harry Witherby’s skills in organising the Bruton Lunch this year. As a result, numbers are noticeably down on previous years.

It has been decided, therefore, to offer only drinks and substantial canapés rather than a full-blown meal. The reception will take place in the Millennium Circle at approximately 11.45 a.m., following the Association’s AGM in the John Davie Room. In the event of bad weather, we will gather in the Memorial Hall.

There will be no charge for this new-style reception. Cheques already received for the Lunch will be returned on the day.

Other events billed for the day will remain unchanged.

David Hindley   Hon. Secretary

Harry Witherby

The Old Brutonian Association was very sad to hear that Harry Witherby
is critically ill in hospital after undergoing emergency open heart
surgery at the end of April. All our thoughts are with him and his
family and our prayers for his recovery.

Harry plays a pivotal role in the OBA, as many of you know, organising
the Summer and London Lunches, networking, managing the website and the
Facebook page, and generally being a 'fount of all wisdom'. At the OBA
meeting on Saturday May 8th we redistributed Harry's jobs and shall
endeavour to step into his shoes. Please bear with us as we get used to
our new roles.

All enquiries for events or for networking should be sent to
oba@kingsbruton.somerset.sch.uk

Details of the summer Lunch and, in time, the London Lunch, will be
available very soon on the website,  and your copy of "The Old
Brutonian" will be landing on your doormat very shortly! '

Sophie Parr

By Harry Witherby in In Memoriam

The very sad news has reached us that Sophie Parr, who was at Kings from 1999 to 2003, the daughter of Malcolm and Rosie Parr, died on December 13th, aged just 24 after a short illness.

Those who knew Sophie will mourn the sudden loss of such a vibrant and cheerful personaliity.  No doubt, the thoughts of all will be with her family at this time.

The funeral was at St Marys, Bruton on Tuesday, December 29th.

Tom Heal
Will Smith

Two more Old Brutonians doing something daft and brave are Tom Heal and Will Smith who left Bruton in 2006 and  who aim to be the youngest ever team to take part in the Woodvale Transatlantic rowing race.

The Woodvale starts on December 6th (so they just have time for the London Lunch) and goes east to west from La Gomera in the Canary Islands to Antigua.  It is completely unaided once the race begins and covers some 2930 miles, taking between 50 and 70 days.

They are rowing to raise money for the Special Boat Service Association (SBSA) and hope to raise at least £75,000 for the trip and funds for their charity.

Go to their web site to learn more about this challenge and to see how you can help.

Good luck to Tom and Will

Monthly reunion in Bristol

User photo not available Sunday, 28 June 09 - 01:57 PM (GMT)
By Harry Witherby in General

There is a very informal reunion of Old Brutonians held at lunchtime on the first Thursday of each month at The Angel in Long Ashton.

There are usually six or seven OBs of various ages and they are always keen to see more OBs there.

The Angel is a historic village pub dating from 1485,  surrounded by farmland, next to a 600 year old church, and yet it is ideally situated less than one mile from Bristol city centre and its business heartland and fifteen minutes drive from Bristol Airport. Fifteen minutes walk away is the newly developed waterfront.

There is a map here
